Today's healthcare systems are too complex and expensive. Working within the parameters of expensive healthcare and its complexity, it is important to utilize all the systems available to members and providers to minimize cost. Healthcare trends toward ancillary support, Complementary Alternative Modalities Care, (CAM) care, are well recognized today. Doctors Professional Services Consultants (DPSC) is a leader in the field of management and utilization of CAM care programs. Some CAM care products are mandated. Mandated products need special attention to help with the utilization and cost controls. CAM care when properly managed will yield cost savings and offer quality to health care. When taking into consideration the wide difference in the nature and complexity of some injuries and conditions that are commonly seen by physicians, it stands to reason that there will be instances which require more or less involved treatment solutions. It is therefore desirable to utilize a system of treatment that reflects these varying levels of care. DPSC has developed a system of case management that employs CAM Treatment Regimens, in a way that provides appropriate care for cases that do not require a higher level of complexity. This does two things... it reduces cost by controlling over-utilization and allows access of more complex cases to the appropriate care givers. DPSC has developed a detailed triage protocol that can assist Primary Care Physicians and their referral coordinators to utilize CAM whenever appropriate. DPSC has developed a system of education for the Plan Regional Representatives to further develop a comfort level with the Primary Care Physicians and referral coordinators. Since the popularity of CAM is at record levels, the addition of this alternative can enhance compliance, reduce unfavorable outcome, and provide greater flexibility in case management.
